Gourami and Betta Care Guides
Gouramis and bettas are labyrinth fish: they gulp air from the surface, so a tight lid should leave a gap and the air above the water should be warm. Males are often territorial with their own kind, and temperament runs from calm honey gouramis to large giant gouramis that need a pond-sized tank.
Quick rules of thumb
- Leave an air gap between water and lid.
- Keep one male of each betta or gourami species per tank unless the tank is large.
- Floating plants help shy fish feel secure.
